Congresswoman Kelly Responses to CBO Healthcare Estimate

Congresswoman Kelly Congresswoman Kelly

Matteson, IL – Congresswoman Robin Kelly, chair of the Congressional Black Caucus’s Health Braintrust, released this statement concerning the independent, non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimate of the costs of the Republicans’ Make America Sick Again bill:

“Today’s CBO report shows what we already knew: the GOP’s ‘repeal and replace’ plan means families will pay more and get less.

The CBO report clearly shows that the winners, chosen by this bill, are insurance company executives and the losers, also chosen by Republicans, are working families, older Americans and those fighting deadly diseases like cancer.

The report shows that premiums will continue to rise, until at least 2020. Additionally, it shows that single policyholders, generally self-employed individuals, small business owners or the most ill, will see a 15-20 percent premium increase.

Most importantly, the CBO report shows that, if their bill becomes law, there will be 24 million Americans living without health insurance by 2026. That’s more sick commuters on CTA, more sick kids in classrooms and more employees missing days of work.

Before this report, I was strongly opposed to this bill. I will continue fighting to protect quality, affordable healthcare for millions of Illinois families. I’m proud to stand with America’s healthcare professionals – the American Medical Association, American Nurses Association and American Hospital Association - and America’s health advocates – AARP, Cancer Action Network and March of Dimes - in opposing this disastrous bill.”
